Q&A with Sammy Brue

Which artists or bands have had the biggest influence on your sound?
Justin Townes Earle and The Avett Brothers.

What was the inspiration behind your latest album?
I’ve never sat down and recorded an album that felt fully like myself. I’ve always recorded in high-end studios, which I’m grateful for, but something about "Nocturnal Country" feels more like me.

How do you approach the songwriting process? Do you have any rituals or routines?
I try to write down lyrics every day. Usually, life will fit the perfect lyrics to the perfect music, and I just have to help it make that decision at the end of the day.

Can you tell us about a song you’ve written that holds special meaning for you?
My song “Keep It Moving” is really a long train of thought from when I was 15 or 16. It’s always fun being able to look back at such an in-depth view of my old brain.

If you could collaborate with any musician, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
I’d like to hop a train with Benjamin Tod of Lost Dog Street Band and write a tune with him.

If your music were the soundtrack to any movie genre, which one would it be?
If Wes Anderson made an indie film with zero budget.

If you weren’t a musician, what other career would you see yourself pursuing?
Panhandling and street dice.

What’s the most surprising song or artist that you listen to regularly?
I always go back to Bad Brains and Nirvana after a couple of months. I love punk music with a passion.

What’s your go-to snack or drink while working on new music?
Spring water from our local spring in Ogden, Utah.

Do you have any pre-show rituals or routines to get you pumped up before a performance?
I try to be grateful and think about why I play music in the first place.
